The Big Issues

You might hear quite a bit about some of these issues during Sport Relief 2012, so here's where you can discover why we think they're so important and how your money can make a difference, both in the UK and abroad.

A Safe Place

Children and young people need a safe place to go; free from bullying, physical harm and gang conflict, which exists across the UK.

Almost 70% of children in the UK have reported being bullied at some point.

Thirteen per cent of 13- to 15-year-olds reported that they knew someone who carried a knife for their own protection.

One in four 16-year-old girls has been attacked or sexually abused by a boyfriend.

Because of you, we can fund projects that give children and young people somewhere they can play, learn, chat, confide and stay safe.

Almost 900 million people worldwide don’t have access to clean water.

Every year more than 3.5 million people die from water-related diseases. Of those, 84% are children.

Every day, 4,000 children die from diarrhoea caused by unclean water from poor sanitation. That’s one child every 20 seconds.

Many children miss school because they have to walk long distances just to fetch water to drink.

By building wells and introducing water-purification methods, Sport Relief cash can provide entire communities with access to clean water.

Vaccines & Diseases

A simple way to save millions of lives

Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to save lives and prevent disease.

Every year, vaccines save the lives of over 2.5 million people, but there’s still more work to be done.

Pneumonia is the leading killer of children worldwide.

1.3 million children die from diarrhoea each year.

Each year, the lives of 1 million children could be saved by vaccines against the two leading causes of pneumonia and diarrhoea.
