James hopes to crack extreme challenge for Sport Relief

16th January 2008
Double Olympic gold medallist, James Cracknell is about to rise to the challenge for Sport Relief 2008 - in a big way.

The rowing legend is all set to race from the UK to Africa under nothing but his own steam!

James will undertake three gruelling challenges to get there - rowing across the freezing English Channel, cycling more than 1,000 miles through France and Spain before finally finding the strength to swim over 14 miles across the treacherous Gibraltar Straights to reach the shores of Africa.

Pushing himself to the absolute limit, he's aiming to do this unique challenge against the clock - only resting for 4 hours out of every 24.

No stranger to extreme physical challenges, in 2005 James embarked on the 2,535 mile Atlantic Rowing Race - often rowing in the nude to avoid painful skin chafing from his sea drenched clothes.

This extraordinary inter continental challenge will raise money for Sport Relief that will be used to help change lives here at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.

Everyone can take on a challenge of their own to raise cash - including being part of the huge Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile.
