The Gateshead Mile
Come on Gateshead! Sign up now and we look forward to welcoming you to run (or walk) your Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile around the acres of picturesque woodland and ornamental gardens of Saltwell Park. Encourage your family and friends to come and cheer you along and, in case watching you complete your Mile challenge isn’t enough of an incentive for them (as if!), we’re going to host loads of entertainment throughout the day including live music and sports demonstrations. There’ll be the chance to try out some sports for yourself - football, rugby and athletics to name but a few - but if that all sounds a bit too hectic for a Sunday afternoon, there’s always the atmosphere to soak in, provided by local musicians and performers who will be taking their positions all around the Mile route. The BBC film crew will be joining us too, so get your best fancy dress outfit on standby and we’ll look out for you on TV!

You will be given a start time or, where possible, we'll give you a selection of start times to choose from.
In order to ensure that the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Miles are safe and fun it hasn't always been possible to find courses that are exactly 1, 3 or 6 miles long. At Gateshead they are 1.03 miles, 2.99 miles and 5.94 miles long, depending on which distance you choose.
Entertainment info
Live music from local bands will provide a great atmosphere all around the Mile route in Saltwell Park. Children’s entertainers will make sure the whole family has a great day out and you have the chance to participate in a wide range of sports too. All in all, Gateshead is the place to be on Sport Relief Sunday 16th March! The range of entertainment provided may be subject to change.

Get there by bus: Bus number 53 leaves from Gateshead Interchange, stopping on Brinkburn Avenue, which leads directly to Saltwell park. Bus number 54 leaves from Gateshead Interchange stopping on Saltwell View, which runs along the Park
Get there by car: Saltwell Park is located directly behind Gateshead College and is signposted from the A167.
