Crazy Golf - competition activity to develop accuracy and coordination

Resources: boxes, buckets, old toilet roll holders, golf clubs, golf balls

  • The first challenge is for students to form teams to make their own golf holes using old boxes and toilet rolls
  • Hold a competition for the most creative end piece
  • Students then put together their golf course in the playground or hall

  • You can create your own or use ours, which is full of interesting sporty facts
  • Get students into small groups which is great for developing team skills

Cheer-a-mile - cheerleading activity useful for gymnastics and coordination

Resources: pom poms optional

  • Show students how to make the letters
  • M – legs apart and arms in a V pointing downwards
  • I - both arms together, palms inward
  • L – both arms out to left or right with palms together
  • E- facing sideways with both arms out one above the other and one leg raised
  • Practise the movements and then ask the students to make up a Sport relief cheer

Longest pass - football activity to develop distance in passing

Resources: Football pitch and balls

  • Whole Class
  • Small Group
  • Outdoor
  • Form into small groups with a football each
  • Make students aware of the distances on the pitch 6m x18m box, half way
  • Groups kick the ball one at a time trying to get the ball as far as they can
  • When all the group have kicked the ball, students estimate the distance, record it and then try again
  • First group to kick the ball a mile wins

Mile on a Machine - competitive endurance activity

Resources: Concept 2 rowing machines, Trickster exercise bikes or similar

  • Small groups depending on number of machines

  • Form into pairs
  • Pairs challenge each other in this activity
  • Make sure students are appropriately warmed up
  • See who can row or cycle the mile (half a mile each) the fastest

Footy team mile challenge - football fitness activity for out of school hours club;

  • Small groups or whole team
  • Outdoor

Resources: Football pitch and footballs

  • Measure the football pitch (approximately 80 -90m).
  • Ask the squad to run 4 lengths of the pitch each.
  • With a squad of 15 this should add up to about 3 miles.

Squad shoot - shooting activity for any out of school hours sports club

Resources: Appropriate targets and balls (at least one each)

  • Whole Class
  • Small Group
  • Indoor

  • Arrange a number of goals appropriate to the sport and have a shooting marathon
  • The challenge is to see how many goals can be scored in 30 minutes.
  • This could also be combined with running if the targets are all spaced at 20m intervals and players have to run from one target to the other.

Mile marathon - for students interested in endurance running at an out of school hours club

Resources: Running track or marked area

  • Whole Team
  • Outdoor
  • Athletes pick their longest training distance to help with endurance
  • This distance should be run an appropriate number of times in a 45 minute training session.
  • Calculate the total distance.The target should be at least 15 miles for a squad of 20 (1 mile = 3¾ laps of a running track
  • Add up all the distances
  • Finish with a mile race with half the team running clockwise and half the team running anti-clockwise on different lanes on the track
  • Get athletes to shout the distance completed at 1 lap, 2 laps, 3 laps and a mile

Dodgeball - competitive coordination activity

Resources: large sponge ball

  • Whole class
  • Indoor
  • Students get into two teams and line up on opposite sides of a centre line
  • Taking turns, players throw a sponge ball between teams at the opposing players
  • Once a player is touched by the ball, the player is eliminated
  • If a player manages to catch a ball in the air, the thrower is eliminated
  • The first team to eliminate their opposition wins!

Teams of students can pay to challenge their friends to a dodgeball match, with everyone else paying to watch

Resources: Appropriate targets and balls (at least one each)

  • Set up three skill areas:
    • Dribbling through a curvy slalom
    • Shooting with or without goalkeepers
    • Passing through targets or a certain number of times
  • Devise a points system and declare a winner
  • This could be adapted for any sport
