Belfast Statues Get Geared Up
27th Jan 2012
As the nation prepares to pull its collective socks up for Sport Relief 2012, it seems that the statues of Belfast are getting in on the action too.
This week, four of the city’s most iconic sculptures were spotted donning deeley boppers, Sport Relief Socks and the official campaign T-shirt, having been given the special Sport Relief treatment.
It’s hoped that by showing their appreciation for this year’s fundraising extravaganza, the statues will inspire the people of Belfast to come out in force and join in the fun at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile.
Amongst them was The Speaker in Custom House who wore his deeley boppers with pride as he called on the people of Belfast to enter the Mile, while Sheep on the Road lined up in their sporty gear too.
Other statues that joined in the fun were The Ulster Brewer, also known as Barrel Man, and Alec the Goose outside St. George’s Market.
The Belfast Mile starts and finishes at Custom House Square on Sunday 25th March and there’ll be plenty of activities to entertain participants on the big day, including dancing, music and sport taster sessions.
It’s one of 17 flagship Miles taking place across the UK and there’s hundreds more Mile events happening in villages, towns and cities throughout the country too.
