The Sport Relief Weekend has been a truly spectacular success this year, and has culminated in the announcement of a massive total of £31,633,091 raised - so far.
The total was announced on The Mile Show on BBC One, which brought viewers the day’s Mile events from around the country. This figure is the total amount donated over the Sport Relief campaign so far and will be spent by Comic Relief to transform lives – both here in the UK and across some of the world’s poorest countries.
The weekend of fundraising kicked off on Friday night with seven hours of jam-packed entertainment on BBC One and BBC Two. Highlights included Gavin and Stacey’s Smithy with our national sporting heroes, Sport Relief does Strictly Come Dancing, Ashes to Ashes, MasterChef, The Choir and A Question of Sport Relief, as well as musical performances from Cheryl Cole, Annie Lennox, Susan Boyle and JLS with Lemar.
At the end of the night, a whopping £29,323,818 total was announced.
Over 165,000 people across the length and breadth of the country took to the streets on Sunday 21st March to take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile, along with a host of famous faces including Eddie Izzard, David Cameron, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Beverley Knight, Colin Jackson, Norman Cook and James Cracknell.
Milers in cities from Brighton to Belfast completed 1, 3, or 6 miles at 16 Flagship Mile cities and hundreds of other Mile events across the land.
Sport Relief would like to say a huge thank you to each and every person who has donated money or given their time to rise to the challenge.
Over three million people have participated in the Sport Relief Weekend – and whether you did the Mile, fundraised at school, or organised activities in the office, we could not have done it without you!
