Watch BBC Sports Personality of the Year from 7pm BBC One tonight
Sunday 15th December: Welsh rugby legend, Gareth Thomas, is nearly there in his quest to deliver the BBC Sports Personality of the Year trophy on time to present to this year’s winner at the live awards show at the P&J live arena Aberdeen. Watch from 7pm BBC One tonight.
Having nearly completed the final day of his mammoth 500-mile, seven-day cycle challenge, The Tour De Trophy for Sport Relief, Gareth set off at 8:00am from Monifieth this morning, with the route taking him through Carnoustie, Arbroath, Montrose and Stonehaven as he approaches Aberdeen.
Having now cycled nearly 500 miles, the equivalent of 20 marathons, the physical and mental fatigue is exhausting as Gareth raises awareness and life changing cash for Sport Relief.
Gareth Thomas said: “When I saw my first sign for Aberdeen today it really gave me a lift, it felt like an achievement, but the real achievement is to raise awareness of Sport Relief funded projects and the lives they help to change. People might recognise me from doing this challenge, but I’d like to believe that they will recognise the reason why I’m doing this.”
Dame Kelly Holmes added: “I feel very lucky to be able to share this special exprience with Gareth and for Sport Relief, it’s amazing. The weather is sub-zero here and I am only doing 10 miles, so what Gareth has been putting himself through should be really admired.”
All of the excitement will be captured and live-streamed on BBC Sport and documented across BBC Radio 5 Live. With the live awards show tonight from 7pm on BBC One.
